Tony Hinchliffe

Tony Hinchliffe paints to evoke emotion—both his own and that of the viewer. For him, the creative process is a form of escapism, a space to explore connection, mood, and beauty through paint. His figurative works are especially powerful, capturing moments of intimacy and vulnerability with expressive, spontaneous brushwork and rich tonal contrasts.

Tony has spent thousands of hours drawing from life, closely observing the subtleties of body language. These details, often fleeting, become central to his work—telling quiet stories about emotion, solitude, and the universal need to feel loved. He primarily works in oils, often layering them over acrylic underpaintings to create depth and fluidity. Early stages are loose and intuitive, with thinned oils behaving almost like watercolour, before Tony builds texture and contrast with careful consideration.

His love for people, nature, and open skies shines through, particularly in his newer landscapes and sky studies—many inspired by his adventures in paramotoring, soaring above the clouds to explore the ever-changing light at altitude.

"I feel I have succeeded when I can look at my finished painting and recall accurately how I felt during the process… a little like re-reading a diary."
