Tim Wang

Tim Wang invites us to slow down in a world that moves too fast. Working exclusively in charcoal, he strips away the distraction of colour to focus on movement, form and emotion. His drawings, rendered entirely in black, white, and every shade between, create a quiet intensity—each one a study in stillness and presence.

Inspired by rhythm and gesture, Tim’s work captures far more than a likeness. His style, which he calls motion impressionism, blends the spontaneity of movement with an almost meditative precision. Using a variety of charcoals, he builds tonal depth and fluid marks that give each subject a unique energy and poise.

Originally trained in Illustration at Arts University Bournemouth, Tim graduated with a D&AD New Blood Award in 2009 and spent several years working as a digital illustrator for publishers including Oxford University Press and Bloomsbury. In 2015, he returned fully to his first love—charcoal—developing the distinctive monochrome technique that now defines his practice.

At Circle Gallery, we’re captivated by the purity and focus in Tim’s work. Each piece offers a pause—a breath—inviting the viewer to feel rather than simply observe.

"Charcoal is simple and honest. It forces me to slow down, to notice, and to be present in every mark."
