Born in Manchester in the late 1960s, Ben Wainwright showed a natural instinct for art from an early age, spending much of his childhood drawing and painting whenever he had the opportunity. Although his professional career initially took him into graphic design, his ambition was always to become a full-time fine artist.

Working first as a graphic designer and later freelance gave Ben the freedom to continue developing his painting alongside his commercial work. Over time, his distinctive artistic style evolved, eventually allowing him to make the transition he had always hoped for and dedicate himself fully to painting.

Ben is best known for his atmospheric cityscapes, town scenes and landscapes, created using a striking monochrome palette of black, white and subtle shades of grey. His understanding of light and shadow brings remarkable depth to his work, transforming familiar streets, architecture and landscapes into beautifully composed scenes with an almost cinematic quality.

There is a wonderful balance of realism and atmosphere in Ben’s paintings. Fine architectural details sit alongside softer, more expressive passages, while reflections, changing skies and dramatic contrasts of light give each composition a strong sense of mood and place.

By stripping away colour, Ben encourages the viewer to notice the elements that might otherwise be overlooked — the fall of light across a building, the shape of a skyline, a reflection on a wet street or the quiet beauty within an everyday scene. The result is work that feels both contemporary and timeless, capturing not simply a place, but the atmosphere and emotion within it.
