Ben Payne

Painting professionally for over twenty years, Ben has developed a distinctive style inspired by the beauty and escapism of the British coastline.

Largely self-taught, Ben’s artistic foundations were shaped by his late mother, a skilled artist who taught him the importance of observation and draftsmanship. Before becoming a full-time painter, Ben worked as a Behavioural Therapist in the field of autism – a career he found incredibly rewarding, although the pull to paint was always there.

The coastline became the natural starting point for his professional work. Drawn to open beaches, expansive skies and the ever-changing character of the sea, Ben creates atmospheric paintings that capture more than simply a place. Describing his approach as “imagined realism,” he searches for the escapist ideal within a scene, creating landscapes that feel familiar yet beautifully removed from the everyday.

Determined to develop his technique, Ben set himself the extraordinary challenge of producing one thousand small studies over a number of years. The process became an invaluable part of his development as an artist, allowing him to continually explore light, colour, composition and atmosphere. These studies also found an audience around the world, with Ben’s work now held by collectors in more than 20 countries.

Today, Ben works from his studio near the south coast, travelling throughout the UK and beyond in search of fresh inspiration. Whether capturing a distant horizon, a dramatic sky or the quiet meeting point between land and sea, his paintings invite the viewer to escape into the landscape and experience a moment of calm.

“I’m always searching for that sense of escapism – an open beach, a far-reaching sky and a landscape that allows you to disappear into it for a while.”
