Joanna Taylor

Joanna Taylor is a landscape artist whose work is defined by her fascination with big skies, dramatic horizons, and the ever-changing language of light. After extensive travels through Africa and the Middle East, Joanna was captivated by the contrast and colour of expansive skies — a theme that continues to shape her painting today. Now settled in Devon with her family, she finds equal inspiration in the raw beauty of Britain’s moorlands and forests.

Dartmoor, Exmoor, the New Forest, and the Yorkshire Dales provide endless material for her cloud studies, which begin with sketches made on location. Back in her studio, she translates these impressions into atmospheric oil paintings, layering shadow, tone, and texture to convey the shifting balance between land and sky.

Inspired by Jacob van Ruisdael’s cloudscapes and the grandeur of Thomas Cole’s vistas, Joanna’s canvases often follow a 70:30 composition — placing the drama of the sky centre stage. Her intuitive use of colour floods each painting with light, creating a powerful interplay between serenity and storm, openness and intimacy.

"Paintings are the ultimate challenge and reward – searching for something different each time... a painting gives a tactile experience and depth which makes owning art a really rewarding experience."
