Alicia Dubnyckyj
Alicia Dubnyckyj is a contemporary British artist known for her distinctive cityscapes, combining traditional painting techniques with modern digital processes to create bold, instantly recognisable views of some of the world’s most iconic cities.
Her innovative style developed from an interest in the way we experience architecture within busy urban environments. At street level, buildings surround us and our perspective is naturally restricted; it is only when we step back that the shapes, patterns and composition of a city begin to reveal themselves. Alicia explores this idea by constructing her paintings from seemingly abstract areas of colour and form which, when viewed from a distance, resolve into striking and familiar city scenes.
Each original begins long before paint reaches the board. Alicia uses her own photography alongside digital techniques to explore composition, perspective and detail, before translating the final image into paint. Working predominantly with gloss paint on board, she creates crisp, highly stylised pieces that balance architectural precision with an almost graphic quality.
Alicia studied Art, Design and Media and was subsequently accepted to study for an MA at the Royal College of Art. Her work has received significant media attention, including appearances on Channel 4 and the BBC, and has been featured in publications including Vogue, Esquire, The Independent and NY Arts Magazine.
Her paintings are held in private collections around the world and have been exhibited internationally, from London and New York to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Vancouver, Venice and Rome. With their unmistakable perspective and contemporary finish, Alicia’s cityscapes offer a fresh way of seeing the architecture and energy of the modern city.
