Faryal Ahmad is a UK-based contemporary artist creating atmospheric abstract landscapes and seascapes in mixed media acrylic. Rich in colour and texture, her paintings blur the boundaries between reality and imagination, inviting the viewer into evocative worlds of her own creation.

Faryal’s journey to becoming a professional artist began after several years working in fashion. Following the sudden death of a colleague, she found herself reassessing the direction of her life and, in 2007, made the decision to pursue the childhood ambition she had put aside and dedicate herself to painting.

Just months later, Faryal was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, temporarily leaving her unable to hold a paintbrush. After nine months away from the studio, returning to painting became an important personal milestone and strengthened her determination to continue creating despite the physical challenges of the condition.

Largely self-taught, Faryal paints intuitively, allowing colour, music, movement and the materials themselves to influence the direction of each piece. Rather than working directly from a particular landscape, she draws upon memory, imagination and dreams, gradually building layers of colour and texture until the painting begins to reveal itself.

Faryal describes these imagined landscapes as “Dreamscapes.” Influenced by her Pakistani heritage, her Muslim faith and her own life experiences, they offer a highly personal interpretation of the natural world without relying on the traditional geometric forms associated with Islamic art.

Each painting begins with a feeling or an image held in Faryal’s mind, but its final destination is never entirely predetermined. The result is an expressive and atmospheric body of work that feels both otherworldly and familiar – landscapes to escape into rather than simply observe.
