Nineth Wave

Artist: Nigel Smith

Edition: Original

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size: 60cm x 60cm

Inspired by the mythology of Britain's ancient landscapes, The Ninth Wave is a powerful meditation on light, water and transformation. Expressive brushstrokes dissolve the boundaries between sea, sky and cloud, creating a dreamlike scene that feels suspended between reality and imagination.

The painting takes its inspiration from The Ninth Wave, a modern retelling of the Welsh folk tales found in The Mabinogion. Across Celtic tradition, the ninth wave symbolises the crossing into the unknown—a place of transformation, mystery and renewal. Nigel also draws on the music that shaped his creative imagination, particularly the evocative storytelling of Kate Bush's The Ninth Wave and Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon.

Rather than depicting a literal landscape, Nigel paints an emotional response to these intertwined influences. Soft reflections, luminous light and energetic mark-making create an atmosphere that is both tranquil and dramatic, encouraging the viewer to pause, reflect and lose themselves within the painting.

A captivating contemporary landscape, The Ninth Wave beautifully combines Britain's changing weather, rich folklore and expressive abstraction into a work filled with depth, movement and quiet wonder.
