Nigel Smith

Nigel Smith is an abstract oil painter whose work explores the shifting, dreamlike relationship between nature, memory, and imagination. Inspired by the fluid beauty of the natural world, his paintings hover somewhere between landscape, fantasy, and lyrical abstraction — what he calls “dreamscapes.” Each piece is a meditation on mood, spirit, and transformation, drawing the viewer into an atmospheric world where form and feeling intertwine.

Influenced by abstract expressionism, East Asian art and philosophy, and the sublime light of Turner and Monet, Nigel’s work is also laced with a playful surrealism — a nod, as he puts it, to 70s prog album covers. The result is a body of work that feels both intimate and epic, anchored in nature but open to interpretation.

In these layered compositions, familiar motifs flicker in and out of view. Is it a distant galaxy, a forest floor, a tidal pool, or something entirely imagined? The ambiguity is part of the magic. His art invites viewers to slow down, lose themselves in texture and tone, and find their own meaning in the mystery.

"I want my paintings to feel like places you’ve half-remembered from a dream — not quite real, but deeply familiar."
